Sixth Hunter River Title Win Elementary For Watson

MELITA Watson won her sixth Hunter River District Golf Association Ladies Championship at The Oaks Country Club last Wednesday.

Watson had 25 scratch stableford points in the event open only to players from clubs in the HRDGA area.

She first won the title when she was Melita Bendeich in a play-off with May Turner in 1967 on her home course at Branxton.

Watson won again in 1982 at Muswellbrook, 1987 at Branxton, 1988 at Muswellbrook and 2000 at Cessnock clubs.

Newcastle pennant player Jill Blenkey won the Nicholas Cup for the open championship for the second time on a countback from Watson. Blenkey first won the title in 2000.

Norma Harris (The Oaks) won the Kath Tulloch Cup with 36 points.

? Horizons trainee Michael Mulholland finished 11th in the NSW Trainees championship at Coffs Harbour last week on 292, nine behind winner Randall Smith, from Queensland. Former Muree amateur Nathan Goodchild tied for seventh.

? Morisset Country Club will hold their second pro-am tournament on August 24 with a 7am and noon shotgun start.

Entry forms are available from club professional David Stretton on 4973 2455 at $20 a player. Each group will host a professional.

? NSW junior representative Corey Hale and his Belmont Golf Club teammate Brendan Smith have been named in the NSW All Schools team for the national championships in Adelaide next month.

The team was selected after the NSW CHS and All Schools titles at Armidale last month.

Melissa Visser, from West Wallsend High, was named a reserve for the girls team.

? Horizons Golf Resort at Salamander will hold their annual amateur championship on August 14 with a two-tee start seeded draw from 6.45am.

The Vardon event costs $65, which includes range balls, breakfast, lunch and drink voucher. Entry forms are available from 4982 0474.

Belmont will stage a qualifying round of the two-person Ambrose Challenge on August 15 and the leading teams qualify for the final at The Oaks. Each team can have only one single-figure marker. Cost for the day is $50 a team.

? The inaugural Hunter Hospitality five-person Ambrose tournament will be played at Belmont on August 8 for members of the industry. Bookings can be made with Ken Harris on 0402 226 889.

? Kurri Kurri will stage their annual Kurri Klassic on August 20 with scratch and handicap events for men and women. Cost for the event is $15 and bookings can be made on 4937 1224 or 4937 1091.

? Entries close on Friday for the Pacific Dunes US PGA Championship Day on August 15.

Cost is $70 and the event is limited to 80 players.
