Based on the 2006 Australian census, Adelaide River has a 190-strong population. It is situated about 113 to 114 kilometers from the capital city, Darwin, and 201 to 205 kilometers from Katherine. Adelaide River has a postcode of 0846. It belongs to the federal division of Lingiari and the state district of Daly.

Adelaide River features the actual body of water by which the community is named after. You can also find here the Stuart Highway. The now non-operational North Australia Rail also crosses through Adelaide River. This town is essentially built as a stopover site that is accessible for both the cities of Darwin and Katherine.
Name Derivation and History
The Adelaide River suburb, obviously, got its name from the river on which banks it was built. Its history dates back to the time of the construction of the overland telegraph line, when the construction laborers inhabited the place as a camp site. It was in 1873, upon the inauguration of an eatery, that the site became sort of hailed as a residential area. Geography
Adelaide River (the river, that is) extends to the sea of Timor which is located, at an estimate, 50 kilometers to the north east of the city of Darwin. As it is with all river landscapes, Adelaide River boasts of plenty of fertile flood plains that made it an agricultural haven.

When you go to Adelaide River, check out the historical railway bridge and station. You can also here the only Australian burial place in Australia for the 495 individuals who died during war times with Japan. The Kakadu National Park, located just adjacent to the suburb, is also one good tourist spot.
